Shunyan Tao studied materials science and engineering at Nanjing University of Technology (Formerly Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology), where he gained his doctorate in 1998. He then worked as a post-doc, associate professor and professor at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS). He is a vice-president of Thermal Spraying Committee of China Surface Engineering Association, and a member of Aerospace Propulsion Committee of Shanghai Society of Aeronautics. With over 90 scientific publications in national and international journals to his name. His research interests include wear resistant, corrosion protection and thermal insulation coatings prepared by thermal spray.
