State Key Laboratory of Functional Crystals and Devices
In order to promote the development of functional crystals and devices in China and expand the country's international influence in this field, the Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the establishment of the "Key Laboratory of Functional Crystals and Devices" by the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics and the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter in November 2024. In January 2025, following an evaluation by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Key Laboratory of Functional Crystals and Devices was approved for construction.
Oriented towards national strategic needs and international scientific frontiers, the laboratory focuses on major scientific issues such as the ordered structure of functional units in crystal materials and multi-scale crystal growth. It aims to establish new principles and methods for the design of functional crystals. The lab is committed not only to creating new crystals with international influence but also to promoting the development of cutting-edge technologies, breaking through bottlenecks in the preparation of several key crystals with ultra-large sizes/ultra-low defects to meet major national strategic needs. Simultaneously, we actively develop key technologies for intelligent crystal preparation and device manufacturing, aiming to achieve a paradigm shift in crystal preparation technology and provide key core material support for emerging industries. Its research is primarily structured around four directions: "New Theories and Mechanisms of Functional Crystals", "Design and Efficient Synthesis of Novel Functional Crystals", "Growth of Large-Size High-Quality Crystals", and "Preparation and Application of High-Performance Crystal Devices".
The State Key Laboratory of Functional Crystals and Devices boasts a research team led by academic leaders including Academicians, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, with outstanding young and middle-aged researchers forming the core academic backbone.
The laboratory has established cooperative relationships with more than 20 universities and research institutes around the world. Domestically, it maintains extensive collaborative exchanges with nearly 30 universities and research institutes.
