The World Academy of Ceramics has conferred upon Professor Shaoming Dong the title of Academician on the 15th election ceremony, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Advancement of Ceramics. In this election, Shaoming Dong is the only one from China mainland among 17 new academicians.

The award ceremony was held on the 13th International Ceramics Conference, June 9, 2014, Montecatini Terme, Italy. In the seventh session of the advanced ceramic matrix composites, Shaoming Dong delivered an invited presentation entitled "Coating and Matrix Modification with Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics for Carbon Fiber Reinforced SiC Matrix Composites", showing the important progress in the field of ceramic matrix composites frontier - composites ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix made by SICCAS.
