Research:
1)Microstructure characterization on thermal sprayed coatings.
TiO2 coatings were prepared on stainless steel by the plasma spraying technique. A new method to improve the photocatalytic efficiencies of as-sprayed coatings was proposed by applying external bias, which can restrain the photo-induced carriers from recombination.
The influence of microstructure features on the thermal conductivity both at room temperature and high temperature has been quantified. It was found that the thermal conductivity decreased with the increase of total porosity at all temperature due to the scattering effect of phonons, but decreased with the increase of large pores at low temperature and increased with the increase of large pores at high temperature for the reason of sintering, and the increase of small pores could increase the number of pores in unit volume.
Finite element model were used to simulate heat transfer and computer thermal conductivity according to realistic microstructure. The effect coefficient of microcracks on thermal conductivities was quantitatively evaluated using the deviation between simulation values and experimental results. The calculated model was developed with the errors lower than 10%. So the prediction of thermal conductivity using microstructure characteristics was achieved.

(c) and (d) finite element mesh generated from the polished cross-section SEM micrograph
(e) and (f) thermal gradient distributions.Grey color represents normal regions and other colors represent nonlinear thermal gradient regions.
2) Characterization technology of SEM
The effect of accelerating voltage, working distance, beam current of SEM on morphologies of non-conductive samples was investigated. How to achieve the real and detailed microstructure information by SEM is one of our goals. The application of EBSD on inorganic materials was also investigated recently.
