State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics
The State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure was founded in April 1988 upon the approval of both the State Planning Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, aiming at promoting the high-performance ceramic research activity in China. The laboratory is subject to the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has been open to all over the world since 1989. In 1991, the laboratory formerly became one of the State Key Laboratories and has been given the name since then. In January 2023, the Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the reorganization of the laboratory as the “State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics”. In January 2025, it passed the reorganization evaluation by the Ministry of Science and Technology and was officially established.
The laboratory is committed to addressing critical national needs and pioneering global scientific frontiers, with a focus on key fields including aerospace, semiconductors, etc. The research of the laboratory encompasses fundamental scientific challenges as well as advanced processes and methods for developing high-performance ceramic materials. It emphasizes key scientific and technological challenges, including new principles and paradigms for designing advanced ceramics, new technologies and methods for material preparation under multi-energy fields, and microstructural control and service behavior of ceramic materials under extreme conditions. The laboratory is structured around four research directions and comprises six research divisions—Frontier Basic Research on Ceramics, Structural Ceramics, Functional Ceramics, Transparent Ceramics, Ceramic Coatings, and Intelligent Research on Ceramics—along with one public support platform.
The State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics owns a research team led by academic pioneers, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and national high-level leading talents, with outstanding young and middle-aged researchers as the core academic backbone.
The laboratory has established cooperative relationships with more than 20 universities and research institutes around the world. Domestically, it maintains extensive collaborative exchanges with nearly 30 universities and research institutes.
