The energy materials research center was founded in 2006 according to both the planning of the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The center is one of the main scientific research units of the institute, engaged in the fundamental researches and applications of the advanced energy materials.

The center consisted of about 30 research staffs, including 7 professors, 8 associate professors, 10 assistant professors and 4 post-doctoral fellows as well as more than 50 graduate students, most of them are Ph.D. candidates.

The main research topics involve high-energy batteries such as lithium ion battery, Na-S battery etc., advanced thermoelectric materials, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), photovoltaic materials, for environmental purification nano materials, nuclear fusion energy related materials, thin-film materials with reversible resistance changing effect, preparation and application of ion-conductive and mixed ionic-electronic conductive materials, nanometer composite materials prepared by SPS technique, and so on.

The center is undertaking a series of national and local government supported projects, including the 863, 973 and supporting programs from the Ministry of the Science and Technology of China, Key and general programs from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, special materials research programs from the government, major and key projects from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, as well as funding from industry and international cooperating programs. About 40 projects are underway. The total budget of the year 2007 was about 2,3000,000 RMB. Each year, the center published about 60 SCI indexed scientific papers and applied 10-20 patents.
