Swiss Delegation Visited SICCAS

On April 23, 2008, the Swiss delegation of science journalism including 16 editors and reporters visited SICCAS. The delegation, headed by Mr. Thomas Muller, member of the Board of the Swiss Association of Science Journalism, was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dongsheng Yan.

The Swiss delegation was on an academic trip in China. Through introduction of Prof. Felicitas Pauss of ETH Zurich, they were very interested in the crystals, nano and biological materials research of SICCAS.

Prof. Yan looked back upon the long standing collaboration history since 1980s among ETH Zurich, CERN and SICCAS on the development and production of artificial crystals for high energy physics. SICCAS provided 12000 pieces of high quality BGO crystals for the L3 detector research led by Prof. Samuel Ding which was the first time for SICCAS to participate in top international scientific projects. Recently, SICCAS has also developed and produced about 5000 pieces of large size PWO crystals for the CMS detector of LHC project at CERN.

At the following symposium, three lectures were given to the Swiss guests : "Development and production of PWO crystals for CMS detector" by Dr. Hui Yuan, "Mesoporous encapsulated nano-composite materials of catalytic conversion for auto-exhaust gases" by Prof. Jianlin Shi and "Bological materials and textures engineering as body implants" by Prof. Jiang Chang. The guests showed strong interest in the lectures and the warmly discussion and exchanges had improved guests' recognition of the outstanding achievements of SICCAS in inorganic materials research.
