SICCAS was honored with the CMS Crystal Award

Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS) was honored with the CMS Crystal Award at the CMS Industry Award ceremony held at CERN, Geneva on April 22nd, 2008.

CMS(Compact Muon Selinoid)is one of the four experiments of LHC project which will start data taking in the coming month. CMS CERN grants the Crystal Award to the institutions with the most significant or innovative contributions during the construction of CMS. SICCAS won the award for the development of radiation resistant Lead Tungstate Crystals, setting up the corresponding production line and producing an unprecedented number of crystals for the CMS ECAL.

Prof. Dongsheng Yan, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a speech at the ceremony through the videoconference system in Shanghai. He said that Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and himself were very delighted to have fruitfully collaborated over these years with the CMS Collaboration, CERN on undergoing research, development and the production high quality Lead Tungstate Crystals for the building of ECAL of CMS Detector. Academician Yan also emphasized that the project had now been successfully completed with great expectations for its operation and performance in the days to come. He was very grateful for the Award bestowed on SICCAS at this occasion and it would be treasured as a symbol of the friendliest international scientific cooperation which would encourage SICCAS to go forward in the years ahead.

SICCAS started R&D of the high quality Lead Tungstate Crystals with ETHZurch in 1993 under the leadership of Prof. D.S.Yan and Prof. Z.W.Yin. In 2000, first 200 pieces of full size crystals were shipped to CMS which showed high performance at CERN. According to the contract between CERN and SICCAS, a total of 4410 crystals were sent to CERN on time from May 2005 to March 2008.
