Invited by Prof. Haosu Luo, Dr. Siu Wing Or, an assistant professor from the department of Applied Physics of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), visited SICCAS from April 25th to 28th. Dr. Or has a wide research interests including smart materials and systems, smart sensor and actuator, ultrasonic transducer, active damping, electronics assembly and packaging, and structural health monitoring, automation and precision machineries. He has made outstanding achievements in these areas and won many awards including “President’s Award for Excellent Performance and Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities 2006” and “Faculty Award for Outstanding Performance and Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities 2006”, besides the “Highest Licensing Values Award 2002”.

 

Dr. Or and Prof. Luo of the Artificial Crystal Research Center have established close collaborations in research fields including magneto-electric composite materials and sensor applications, especially those based on novel high performance relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystal piezoelectric materials (such as PMNT crystal). They have co-published several important academic papers in APL, JAP and other influential journals regarding relevant researches. Also, they have conducted a Ph.D student co-training program between SICCAS and AP of PolyU. Two of Prof. Luo’s Ph.D students have been in Dr. Or’s research group in Hong Kong performing relevant materials and devices cooperation research.

 

The colleagues in functional materials of SICCAS discussed with Dr. Or to strengthen bi-lateral research collaboration this time. On April 26, Dr. Or also gave a lecture on Research in Smart Material Systems and Structures at PolyU. In the lecture, Dr. Or introduces in detail his research group’s substantial research results and the research direction in future. His lecture received great appreciation and aroused great interests from the participants. Several professors in ferroelectric materials of SICCAS then discussed with Dr. Or on the potential collaboration in future. On April 27, Dr. Or visited the Jiading campus of SICCAS. Prof. Luo introduced the new results of his research group on piezoelectric motors, piezoelectric transformers and newly modified ferroelectric crystal smart materials. After two-day communication, both sides hope to have fruitful collaboration in future.
