Shanghai Institute of Ceramics Successfully Organized Summer Camp for Undergraduates

Between 19-14 July & August 26 2023Shanghai Institute of Ceramics conducted its 2023 summer camp for undergraduates. Conducting in a combination of online and offline, the summer camp has attracted more than 900 undergraduates from more than 80 colleges across the country to enroll, and eventually more than 300 students were selected. The Institute has prepared a variety of online and offline activities for the summer camp. Students were able to receive academic nourishment, broaden their horizons in scientific research, and improve their understanding of the Institute by traveling to the subject group, watching the head of each research center introduce themselves, listening to expert academic reports, and communicating and interacting with senior fellows and supervisors.

On July 10th, Mr. Su Liangbi, deputy director of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a welcome speech. Mr. Su Liangbi introduced the overall development of the institute and the features of our postgraduate cultivation. He expressed his welcome to the campers and encouraged them to apply for SICAS, adding strength to the construction of inorganic materials in China.

On the afternoon of July 10 and the morning of July 11, Yin Jie, deputy director of the Research Center for Structural Ceramics and Composites; Yu Yun, director of the Key Laboratory of Inorganic Coatings Materials; Chen Hangrong, Director of the State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Ultramicrostructures, Wen Zhaoyin, Director of the Energy Materials Research Center, Liu Xuanyong, Director of the Center for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Cao Xun, Deputy Director of the Center for Ancient Ceramics and Industrial Ceramics, Qian Rong, Deputy Director of the Center for the Analysis and Testing of Inorganic Materials, and Ding Dongzhou, Deputy Director of the Center for the Pilot Research and Development of New Materials, gave a detailed introduction of the research direction, scientific research achievements, supervisory team, as well as postgraduate training and employment of their laboratories and centers respectively.

On the morning of July 12, researcher Hangrong Chen delivered a report titled "Construction of Functional Nano-biological Platforms and Their New Strategies for Anti-tumor Therapy", leading the campers to track the international scientific research frontiers, and providing an introduction to the exploration of nano-materials and nano-catalytic medicine in tumor therapy. The presentation was followed by a report "Research on New Methods and Applications of Multimodal Nano Thermal Characterization" given by researcher Huarong Zeng, which led the audience to understand the significance of the cutting-edge characterization technology tools for the development of semiconductor materials and thermoelectric materials.

The students fully appreciated the wisdom and erudition of the researchers of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in the wonderful academic report, where students actively in

During the summer camp, online communication activities were also organized between the students, the supervisors and the graduate students in the institute. The activity invited front-line young tutors and outstanding graduate students of the class of 2021 to give students an in-depth understanding of the supervisors' guidance with their students, the situation of research, study and life of graduate students. The whole picture of the life of graduate students in the institute was introduced to the campers.

The summer camp closing ceremony was held in the afternoon of 14th. Lu Caifei, deputy director of the Graduate School of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, delivered a closing speech. As the summer camp draws to a close, she expressed her hope that the students would gain an understanding of the hard scientific research strength of the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics and experience the faculty and student collaboration at the institute in building the initial dream. She also wished for the students to have the greatest amount of enthusiasm and to join the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics together, for the motherland of the cause of inorganic materials to contribute to the strength.

Wei Shimao from Shandong University, Zhao Yingpu from Nanjing University of Technology, Liu Yeze from Xiamen University, Liu Shufeng from Northeastern University, and Li Anqi from Tianjin University delivered their closing remarks. During the one-week summer camp, students described encountering a very different academic atmosphere, from material preparation to molding and processing to characterization of material structure and function, all of which reflected advanced scientific research equipment and cutting-edge research direction. They aspire to be able to complete their studies and devote themselves to the research and development of novel materials at SICAS.

In the comprehensive quality assessment session on the 14th, the assessment team of the Institute conducted a comprehensive assessment of the campers and issued certificates of completion to those who passed the assessment.

On August 26, Shanghai Institute of Ceramis held the offline activities of 2023 Summer Camp for Undergraduates, during which students made a field visit to the Institute, not only visiting the exhibition hall of achievements of SICAS and the base of scientists' spirit, but also learning to understand the instrumentation of the laboratories, the relevant research directions and the research progress.

This summer camp gave undergraduates from various universities around the nation a chance to visit and learn about the Institute, in addition to creating a platform for the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics to demonstrate the breadth of its scientific research.
