Bismuth-doped optical fibers: review of the current state of the art

Sergei Firstov

Fiber Optics Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia

This talk is devoted to the current state of the art in a study of bismuth-doped fibers fabricated by MCVD technique. Basic optical properties of the Bi-doped fibers are considered. Main attention is focused on the parameters of the Bi-doped fiber amplifiers (BDFAs) for different spectral ranges and principle of development of ultra-broadband amplifier using Bi- and Er-codoped fibers. In addition, the results regarding data transmission experiments using BDFAs via telecom links are presented. In last part, characteristics of the pulsed (mode-locked and Q-switched) lasers based on bismuth-doped fibers are demonstrated and discussed further perspectives.
