The 14th Asian BioCeramic Symposium (ABC2014) was successfully held in Shanghai Rainbow Hotel from October 28th to 30th, 2014. The symposium was organized by Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS). Prof Jiang Chang is the chair, and Prof Chengtie Wu is the secretary of ABC2014. Prof. Dongliang Jiang and Prof. Jiang Chang from SICCAS presided over the opening ceremony. Prof. Lixin Song, the director of SICCAS, expressed warm welcome to all the participants. More than 160 colleagues from over 10 countries and regions (i.e., Switzerland, France, Japan, Korea, Australia, Indonesia) attended this symposium.

The ABC symposium is held annually in Asian countries from 2001, gathering scientists, engineers, medical device manufacturers, dentists and surgeons from Asia and all over the world, and this is the first time to be held in the mainland of China. In ABC2014, Prof. Fuzhai Cui from Tsinghua University, China and Prof. Marc Bohner from Switzerland gave excellent plenary lectures. Totally 24 keynote lectures, 79 oral presentations and 35 poster presentations were given in this symposium, including four cutting-edge research topics, namely Bioceramics and composites for tissue regeneration; Nano inorganic materials for bio-imaging, diagnosis and therapy of cancer; Bioceramic coatings; Nano inorganic materials for drug/gene delivery. In this symposium, 4 students were awarded best oral presentations and 2 students were awarded best poster presentations. They are from Kyushu Institute of Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Queensland University of Technology, Sichuan University and Shanghai Institute of Ceramics Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively.

More than 50 participants from abroad and 110 participants from China attended this symposium, including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, Zhongshan University, Sichuan University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, South China University of Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Hunan University, Chongqing University, Southwest Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Soochow University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, The Fourth Military Medical University, University of Changzhou, Donghua University, China Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences Ningbo material technology and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of metal research, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of life sciences, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine Health Science Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen Institute of advanced technology, Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen, Shanghai Jiao Tong University affiliated ninth people's Hospital, Unilever (China) Investment Co. Ltd. and Kunshan overseas.

This symposium offered a very good opportunity to exchange scientific ideas, suggestions and opinions in the field of bioceramic related research and development, which greatly enhanced the basic and applied research in this field. The symposium had important significance in strengthening collaborations between researchers in China and abroad.
