The First China-Russia Bilateral Forum on Materials was held by SICCAS

The first China-Russia bilateral forum on New Optical Materials and Techniques was held in Shanghai, Nov. 15-20, 2009. This forum was hosted by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and was organized by Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS). About 40 experts and researchers of optic functional materials and engineering research field from the Russia Academy of Sciences(RAS) and CAS participated this forum. The vice director of CAS, Professor Lidong CHEN, the director of the Key Laboratory of transparent and opto-functional advanced inorganic material of CAS, Professor Jingtai ZHAO and the vice director of the laboratory, Professor Jun XU, took part in the forum as the organizing committee members.

The forum mainly focused on the new development and prospective views of optical materials and techniques. The topics included the laser materials, laser techniques, nonlinear optical materials, scintillation and fluorescent materials. About 22 relevant experts were invited to give talks according to the topics of this forum, and to present their recent development and prospective views of optical materials and techniques.

Professor Dianov, the director of the Fiber Optical Research Center, Ioffe Pysicotechnical Institute of CAS, as the head of Russia delegation, introduced their latest progress in optical materials and laser technology. The Chinese delegates from Institutes of CAS also gave talks and communicated with Russia researchers. These institutes included Institute of Physics, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Material, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and Shanghai Institute of Ceramics. During the discussion, Professor Jingtai Zhao, Professor Jun Xu and Professor Guorong Li reported the achievements in scintillation crystals, Bi doped crystals and electro-optical properties of optical ferroelectric ceramics respectively.

The Russia delegation also visited SICCAS and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Bilateral delegates expect to strengthen the collaboration and enhance the friendship between CAS and RAS. The delegates believe that this Forum has developed a cooperation and exchange platform for the material scientists from China and Russia and laid the foundations for the next Forum in the future.
