  Abstract: The synthesis of Eu3+:Sr2CeO4 nanocrystals prepared by a modified sol–gel method is reported. The nanocrystalline powders were annealed at different temperatures to control the average grain size of nanocrystals. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra of  Eu3+:Sr2CeO4 nanocrystals were recorded and investigated in a temperature range 10–300 K. In particular the influence of temperature and average nanocrystal size on the optical properties of Eu3+:Sr2CeO4 was investigated. It was found that with increasing grain size the luminescence lifetimes significantly decreased. The shortening of lifetimes was extremely strong at elevated  temperature. The strong thermal quenching of lifetimes may be applied for luminescence thermometry. 

  Brief introduction: Born in 1976 in Wroclaw (Poland). Doctor of chemistry at the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw. Since 2005, Director's Proxy for implementations and research projects. Vice-editor of the internatioal journal Optical Materials. Present research activity are laser spectroscopy, nanocrystals syntheses, sol-gel materials, rare-earth elements, luminescent markers, nanoceramic processing and characterization and luminescence properties of the rare-earth ions in glasses, nanoceramics and nanocomposites. CEO in Nanovectors Sp. z o.o. (since 2011, securing of valuable objects) and in Ipanterm Sp. z o.o. (since 2013, new fire-proof insulating materials). Published more than 120 publications in international journals  and book chapters (h-index 23, >1700 total citations) and 16 patents and patents pending.
